spyware

As spyware and viruses evolve so do your options with how to deal with them.  First of all what is spyware?  Spyware is software that has been written to add something to your computer system.  What does it add?  That all depends on the spyware.  Spyware ranges from programs that track where you are to spyware that sends your passwords to servers awaiting for them.  There is no good spyware.

How do you deal with spyware?  Good software tools are essential.  You should be running the latest Spybot Search and Destroy along with Lavasofts Adaware.   Both of these software tools are available for free from our software download site.

When should you check your machine?  That all depends on usage but a once a week scan keeps your machine running smoothly and will keep those pests off your machine.

Internet Explorer Zero-Day Exploit

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

There is a Zero-Day Exploit that is targeting all versions of Internet Explorer.  We strongly suggest using Firefox or Google’s Chrome for all Internet browsing.  If you have to use Internet Explorer for an application reason, please get your system updated and follow these steps for Internet Explorer:

Set Internet and Local intranet security zone settings to “High” to prompt before running ActiveX Controls and Active Scripting in these zones:

  1. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab, and then click the Internet icon.
  3. Under Security level for this zone, move the slider to High. This sets the security level for all Web sites you visit to High.  If no slider is visible, click Default Level, and then move the slider to High.

Configure Internet Explorer to prompt before running Active Scripting or to disable Active Scripting in the Internet and Local intranet security zone:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click Internet, and then click Custom Level.
  4. Under Settings, in the Scripting section, under Active Scripting, click Prompt or Disable, and then click OK.
  5. Click Local intranet, and then click Custom Level.
  6. Under Settings, in the Scripting section, under Active Scripting, click Prompt or Disable, and then click OK.
  7. Click OK two times to return to Internet Explorer.
